What is keto?
Keto is a low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat diet that encourages the body to burn fat for energy rather than carbs. This diet can encourage a state called ketosis which can be helpful for those looking to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight, as well as for those with certain dietary requirements such as Type 2 diabetes.
But what are macros and why are they important?
Macronutrients or, more often referred to in keto circles as ‘macros’, are the key constituents of nutrition. We need them to provide us with energy in the form of calories. Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are the main types of macro that we consume, and they are each transformed into energy. Fat actually has the most, with around nine calories per gram, while carbs and proteins convert into about four calories per gram.
Now, when it comes to the keto diet, it’s important to look at how each of these macros breaks down into energy. The key for a keto diet is the production of ketones and this is where it gets really interesting for weight-loss or management. Ketones are the secret for breaking down fat in the body, so in order to effectively have a keto diet, we must eat foods that maximize the ketogenic processes.
Fats lead the way, as high-energy, high-ketogenic macros. In fact, fats are about 90% ketogenic (and 10% anti-ketogenic). Meanwhile, protein is about 50/50, while carbs are totally anti-ketogenic. We know that to achieve ketosis and a fat-burning diet, we need to consume more in the way of fats and proteins, and minimize the consumption of carbs. As anti-ketogenic macros, carbs spike the blood glucose and insulin levels, which effectively blocks the production of ketones.
Proteins are important for the body, including processes like maintaining and building muscle mass, so we can’t just rely on fats for all our energy. On the other hand, carbs aren’t nutritionally essential.
By choosing a keto diet, minimizing carb intake, and consuming healthy fats and proteins as your main energy source, you can achieve body goals and maximise your health. That’s why so many people are seeing the benefits of keto – better weight management and greater amounts of energy…what’s not to love!
Whatever your reason may be to take on a Keto diet, we recommend consulting with your doctor beforehand to ensure that you are aware of the key factors that will determine what your carbs, fats and protein needs are whilst on Keto such as age, height, body fat percentage, activity levels and any pre-existing health conditions.
